Tottenham Hale residents boycott developer and Haringey Council tower talking shop

On 2nd November 2017 a group of Tottenham Hale residents organised a boycott of the Haringey Council developer management forum meeting to hear from Argent about their proposal for a 16-storey tower on the site of the demolished Welboirne Centre.

The protestors are residents living on the nearby Chesnut Estate and in the surrounding roads off Park View Road. Representing the Chesnut RA, Dowsett Area RA, and the Friends of Down Lane Park.

The residents are appalled that the… Continue

Pollution threatens Tottenham schools

Our survey shows that children in Tottenham schools are exposed to pollution way above legal limits.

So we at Tottenham & Wood Green Friends of the Earth have launched a petition calling on Haringey to do more to tackle the pollution problem. We recognise they are taking action, but the urgency of the situation requires even more – and the more support we can show, the more willing the Council will be to take strong measures. We need hundreds of people to sign up – so far we have…

Understanding why people do - or do not - volunteer

Hi all,

I am currently studying for a qualification in the development of volunteering. As part of my studies into the development of volunteering, I am looking to understand more about why people start, continue to and stop volunteering.

There is plenty of research into why people are motivated to volunteer; however I am looking to find out more about the reasons behind the motivations.

I'm also interested in why people continue volunteering, and what makes… Continue

Novermber 2015 round-up of Tottenham community news

The below update on recent Tottenham news was circulated to the Tuesday 18th November 2015 meeting of the Dowsett Estate Residents Association, held at the church hall on Mitchley Road N17.

What’s been happening recently?

Works on Holcombe Market

The big news is that the council has finally got round to signing a contract for the Holcombe Market. Three and a half years ago the Council pledged to improve the market one of the '12 in 2012' pledges. The… Continue

Open letter calling on Councillor Alan Strickland to resign for the future of Holcombe Market

Haringey Council is finally on the verge of starting the promised improvement work to Holcombe Market - that includes two stalls becoming five - on the Tottenham High Road. Yet, this is little cause for regeneration lead Councillor Alan Strickland to be smug. 1301 days have passed since his 8th March 2012 pledge to improve the market.

Now having signed the official papers allowing council officers to enter into a contract with the business that won the tender for the work, it would… Continue

August 2015 latest from Down Lane Park N17‏

Below is the latest news from Down Lane Park.

Those interested in the policy of hiring out parks debate should note is that the council has back-tracked on its initial finding that the damage to the new path was caused by the recent funfair trucks crossing over it. Now, the council are saying the damage to 27 of the path edge stones is the fault of the contractor's method of installation. Thereby, the controversial parks hire policy is not to blame for damage to parks. All too… Continue

More staff and more funds: the rise of the Tottenham regen team‏

A Freedom of Information answer has revealed a large increase in both the Tottenham regeneration team size and the budget they have to spend.

At a time of budgetary cuts and jobs losses; the Tottenham regeneration team goes in the opposite direction to what is happening to other Haringey Council departments.

The number of staff has increased by seven since 1st January 2015, taking the team from 13 to 20 members.

The cost of the additional staff in 2015-15 is… Continue

Stand and deliver' an improved Down Lane Park in a greener Tottenham Hale‏

Open letter to Haringey Councillors and regeneration staff sent on Wednesday 10th June 2015.

Cllr McNamara is the cabinet member for parks, and Mr O'Brien is the Regeneration Manager for Tottenham Hale.

Dear Cllr McNamara and Mr O'Brien,

As tonight's unpublicised meeting with Chesnut Estate residents is the real start to the council's latest round of regen 'consultation' then I am asking you to commit today to start to genuinely improve Tottenham… Continue

Oppose Spurs demolition of White Hart Lane

No, this is not about the stadium. Rather, I referring to the row of small retail units located on White Hart Lane - 44, 46, and 48-50 - between the Grange and White Hart Lane railway station.

Spurs have put in planning applications to demolish them and then erect hoardings around the cleared land. Which would create near the station another unsightly site similar to that which has blighted the Tottenham High Road for too long now..

We do not want our area to be viewed as… Continue

Can Haringey Council stop hawking Down Lane Park around to event promoters

Another consequence of Haringey Council's policy of hiring out our parks.

The text of the objection below should be self-explanatory. But happy to answer any questions.

Martin

I am at this stage stating a formal objection to this event application being approved.

Further reasoning will follow. The short of it is that we are fed-up with our park being hawked around to event promoters and the consequence being that the usual park users… Continue

Down Lane Park is a community facility and not a commercial music venue

Please find below the Friends of Down Lane Park objection to a proposed music event in the park. We have requested that the application be refused because of the disturbance similar events have caused the local community and that the park is not an appropriate venue for commercial music events. The park is there for people to relax and play; not a council cash cow.

FDLP consultation response on the proposals dreadful impact on the lives of people living and working in Tottenham Hale

This section of the Friends of Down Lane Park's official response to the Haringey Council planning consultation outlines that the monstrous building proposals are not good for the existing community and are unlikely to create a wonderful place for people in the 'new' Tottenham Hale. It sets out an alternative vision of development that is not a forest of tower blocks and also retains the employment land that is short-sightedly being re-classified for residential use. Despite existing successful… Continue

FDLP consultation response on the need for green development in the future of Tottenham Hale

This section of the Friends of Down Lane Park's official response to the Haringey Council planning consultation sets out the need for green development in the future of Tottenham Hale. It calls for immediate improvement of The Paddock and investment in play facilities for existing residents. It argues for an end to the monstrous buildings massing around the area and for development to be more inline with being part of the Lea Valley.

Section 1 is about the work of the Friends in… Continue

FDLP consultation response on the detrimental impact of tower blocks around Down Lane Park

This section of the Friends of Down Lane Park's official response to the Haringey Council planning consultation sets out why surrounding Down Lane Park with tower blocks will have a detrimental impact on the park. It calls for increased park space to meet the needs of existing and new residents, and investment in facilities in the green corridor along Fairbanks Road on the Chesnut Estate.

Section 1 is about the work of the Friends in defeating previous plans to build flats on the… Continue

FDLP consultation response opposess damaging and unnecessary green road link in Tottenham Hale

This section of the Friends of Down Lane Park's official response to the Haringey Council planning consultation sets out why the proposed green road link would damage the park and is about marketing Hale Village than improving use of the area' green space. There is no evidence that it is what people ant or what people would use. Rather, the existing routes connecting the residential area to the north of Down Lane Park to the marshes and the Lea Valley should be improved.

Response was… Continue
